Herbal medicine makes use of the natural healing qualities of plants. The use of herbs is a safe, effective way to restore the body to a state of health, particularly in conjunction with acupuncture or acupressure. Chinese Herbal Medicine is almost always prescribed as a formula, and contains varying amounts of different herbs. This means that the formula is balanced; some of the herbs in the formula address the specific concernsof the patient, while others work to prevent unwanted side effects.
There are several ways that this medicine can be taken. Patent herbs come in the form of small pills and are the mildest, least expensive, and most popular. Powdered herbs can be added to boiling water and taken as a tea; this method produces stronger medicine, and is more expensive. Alternately, raw herbs can be decocted into a tea in a process that takes approximately an hour. This creates excellent medicine, but is time consuming and more costly. |
